Rome's Largest Public Transit System Upgrade in Decades
$1 million will be allocated to improve bus services in Rome
ROME, N.Y. /Mar 4, 2024 /WKTV -- Governor Kathy Hochul announced the largest upgrade to the City of Rome's public transit system in decades.
$1 million will be allocated to improve bus services in Rome, leading to an increase in the number of buses and drivers available to serve the residents.

The investment comes from the governor's Innovative Mobility Initiative, which was announced in the 2023 State of the State Address.
Central New York Regional Transportation Authority (Centro) has redesigned bus routes and initiated a microtransit "MOVE" service.
"Centro’s redesigned service for Rome came after extensive studies of the existing service structure and engagement with riders, stakeholders and drivers to get their feedback on how best to serve the area," the governor's office said in a release.
There are three fixed routes that increase in frequency from every 45 minutes, to every 30 minutes. The route serves Griffiss Airpark, Rome Health Hospital and the Erie Boulevard corridor.
Rides can be scheduled in what's called a "MOVE" zone by calling 315-356-MOVE.
Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez said that it's a curb-to-curb service.
"The great thing is that now you've got a transit option where you don't have to wait on a scheduled service. You can literally call a number or use the app to say, 'This is where I am, and I'm looking to get to your destination, whatever that might be," Dominguez said.
This is the first of its kind in the State, and if successful, Centro will look at bringing it to other areas.
“The improvements in Rome," Hochul said, "are part of our commitment to modernizing our transportation systems across New York to give riders more options and better service, which helps our local communities prosper.”
Rome's new mayor Jeffrey Lanigan said, “Investing in public transit is crucial for the well-being and connectivity of our communities. We are grateful to Governor Hochul for her commitment of $1 million to enhance Rome's public transit system. This grant will enable Centro to expand its service offerings and ensure that all riders, including those facing barriers, have equitable access to reliable transportation.”
State Senator Joseph Griffo (R-C-Rome) said that they need to continue to improve public transit in New York.
"These upgrades will enhance public transportation, sustain service and provide more efficient and frequent options to users in Rome,” Griffo said.
