Tijuana Unveils Strategic Mobility and Road Safety Projects to Business Leaders
Tijuana‘s SEMOVIS presented strategic urban mobility projects to business leaders, including new agencies, modernized traffic signals, key infrastructure expansions, and enhanced road safety initiatives to improve citywide transit.
Tijuana's Department of Sustainable Urban Mobility, Inspection, and Road Safety (SEMOVIS) presented a series of strategic projects and recent progress updates to local business leaders this week, highlighting efforts to enhance mobility and road safety across the city.
The meeting with members of Tijuana Coparmex was convened by SEMOVIS head Apolinar Fernández Álvarez, who stated the goal was to fulfill Mayor Ismael Burgueño Ruiz's directive for closer collaboration with all city sectors.
The meeting served as a platform to introduce SEMOVIS's new Internal Regulations, which formally establish a dedicated Mobility Agency and a Public Road Directorate. This restructuring is designed to strengthen urban mobility planning and management.
During the presentation, Fernández Álvarez reported the modernization of 148 traffic signals, which are now centrally managed from a new Traffic Light Management Center. He also informed that a major traffic light synchronization effort has been completed along critical corridors, including Agua Caliente, Díaz Ordaz, Federico Benítez, and Bellas Artes boulevards, as well as the Ignacio Zaragoza Roundabout, Simón Bolívar Boulevard, and Tecate Street.
The head of SEMOVIS also outlined key infrastructure projects including:
The construction of a new ramp from Vía Rápida Oriente to Playas de Tijuana
A four-lane expansion of the section leading to the Alamar Bridge
A new connecting tunnel on Terán Terán Boulevard
Modifications at Manuel J. Clouthier Boulevard and the Santa Fe Roundabout to improve traffic flow
Beyond these improvements, Fernández Álvarez emphasized a renewed commitment to road safety. He detailed ongoing traffic control operations in high-congestion areas and a public awareness campaign disseminating safety messages to both pedestrians and drivers.
The importance of this public-private dialogue was echoed by the president of Coparmex Tijuana, Roberto Vega Solís, who recognized its value in creating joint proposals for the city's mobility and development.
The forum provided members of the Coparmex Board of Directors an opportunity to voice their concerns, observations, and proposals to the SEMOVIS leadership.
The Tijuana government reiterates its open-door policy, with the aim of addressing initiatives from both the business sector and the general public that contribute to the development of our city.
