Youngstown Plans Traffic Signal Upgrade Project
The City of Youngstown is using a $1.8 million grant to upgrade 35 traffic signals. The project aims to improve traffic flow, enhance safety for drivers and pedestrians, and modernize the city‘s infrastructure with new, efficient equipment.
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The city is looking to replace or remove the existing traffic signals at 17 intersections along Market Street and Indianola Avenue to improve vehicle and pedestrian safety, enhance pedestrian accessibility, allow better traffic flow and remove unneeded traffic signals.
According to a news release, the traffic signal replacement part of the project will include new signal heads, signal supports, controllers, radar detection units, pedestrian signal heads and pedestrian push buttons; updating and replacing signage; repainting stop bars and crosswalks; and improving pedestrian ramps.
Though most of the proposed project will be constructed within the existing roadway right-of-way, minor amounts of new permanent and/or temporary right-of-way will be needed, the release states. If right-of-way is required from a property, a real estate specialist representing the city will contact the owner.
Access to all businesses and properties will be maintained at all times during construction, the release states. No detours will be required, and substantial traffic disruptions are not expected during the project. Single-lane closures and/or flagging operations will be used to maintain traffic during working hours.
Construction is anticipated to begin in summer 2027.
Though the city doesn't expect any substantial impacts on environmental resources, the public works department is seeking comments regarding the social, environmental and economic impacts of the project, such as the effect on residents, businesses, the local economy and historic or cultural resources.
